Illuminating Africa’s Digital Future: Meta 2Africa Cable Launch at Zeitz MOCAA

When Meta approached us to create something truly spectacular for the launch of their landmark 2Africa undersea cable project, bringing internet infrastructure to millions of people across Africa, we knew this was an opportunity to create something memorable.

We were delighted to be involved in this exciting project that would quite literally connect continents and transform lives through enhanced digital connectivity. We thank Jamjargh for bringing us on board the proejct and hope to work with Guido and the team again.

The Vision: Bringing Data to Life

The client wanted something special—a visual experience that would capture the magnitude of this infrastructure achievement. The challenge was to depict the invisible: the connections, data flowing through thousands of kilometers of undersea cables, and the data visualization that would make this abstract concept tangible and inspiring.

Technical Innovation: 3D Modeling Meets Projection Mapping

Our approach combined cutting-edge 3D modeling with precision projection mapping. We modeled the undersea cables in three dimensions, then meticulously mapped them to each of the three iconic grain silos at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in Cape Town. The silos, with their distinctive cylindrical architecture and rich history as former grain storage structures, provided the perfect canvas for this story of connection and transformation.

The technical setup utilized a single high-brightness laser projector equipped with an ultra-wide lens, allowing us to cover the expansive facade completely. Significant effort went into mapping the surfaces precisely and delivering a perfect final result that honored both the architecture and the message.

The Experience: A Symphony of Light and Sound

The three-minute projection mapping show was a complete sensory experience. We produced a custom soundtrack specifically for this event, incorporating dramatic sound effects that complemented the visual narrative. Every element—from animation to audio—was created in-house by Cape Lasers and our talented team of designers.

The show depicted data flowing like rivers of light across the cables, pulsing with energy as they connected Africa to the world. Visual effects emphasized the scale and importance of the infrastructure, creating an immersive experience that matched the momentous occasion.

The entire event was livestreamed to the venue inside, ensuring that all attendees could experience the show whether they were in the courtyard or viewing from the interior spaces.

Partnership and Location

We collaborated closely with Jamjar Events (jamjargh), and we’re very grateful to them for bringing us on board for this prestigious project. Their trust and coordination were instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

The Zeitz MOCAA courtyard is a fantastic space with rich history—we always love working at this iconic venue. The contrast between the industrial heritage of the silos and the cutting-edge technology of the projection mapping perfectly mirrored the story we were telling: honoring the past while building the future.

The Result

The client was extremely happy with the final result, and we were equally impressed by the effects we achieved. The combination of precision technical execution, creative storytelling, and the dramatic setting created an unforgettable moment for everyone present.

This project exemplifies what Cape Lasers does best: transforming complex technical achievements into visceral, emotional experiences through the power of light, sound, and architecture. When infrastructure becomes art, moments become memories—and we’re proud to have played our part in celebrating Africa’s digital future.
